Toy Story & Toy Story 2 in 3D are Great

When it comes to movie-makers I trust to deliver a great experience, I’d probably put Pixar at the very top of the list (#2 would likely be Chris Nolan). Even though I’d already seen Toy Story and Toy Story 2 when they first came out in theaters, and even though it’s a foregone conclusion I’ll be picking up the Blu-Rays next year, I still made it out to theaters to see the 3D double-feature. A lot of stuff people thought was great in the past doesn’t hold up to modern viewings, but these movies are just as terrific as they ever were.

Actually, in some ways, they’re better. They were both re-rendered using modern Pixar computers to make the textures a lot sharper than they were in the original releases. The 3D is also very effective, as you would probably expect if you saw Up in 3D a few months ago. Pixar didn’t insert any new instances of junk being thrown at the screen or any nonsense like that, so the 3D is just there to add depth to each scene and draw you further into the Toy Story world. I think the lack of silly 3D stunts is most of the reason why it’s easy to be in theater with those glasses on for 3+ hours without getting a headache. There’s also a 10-minute intermission, with bonus clips and Toy Story trivia, so you can stretch your legs and use the bathroom.

You don’t need me to tell you Toy Story and Toy Story 2 are great movies. They’re widely considered to be classics, and you’ve probably already seen them. The question is: should you watch them both again in 3D? If you have the chance, you definitely should.
