The Soup is Great
My girlfriend and I like to occasionally get together with another couple to watch TV. Our favorite shows are The Office, 30 Rock, Saturday Night Live, and such like that. So far this Fall, with all of us taking college classes, it’s been more difficult than ever to gather up the four of us at the same time, and we have weeks worth of TV stored up on the TiVo. Yet for whatever reason the one show we can consistently summon the group together for is The Soup on E!.
What The Soup does is gather up the most absurd clips of TV shows from the past week, mostly reality shows and talk shows but occasionally they’ll even add soap operas or kids shows or local news, and make fun of them. It’s a simple formula, but man, it just works. Host Joel McHale (now also on Community, a show we’ve only managed to watch one episode of to date) is the king of turning TV trash into comedy treasure.
Almost every segment of the show now has its own bumper, which all of us will happily yell out either during the show or just at random moments in our lives. And you other Soup fans know what I’m talking about.
Chicks, man!
It’s Miley!
It’s Lindsey.
Soooo meaty…
My favorite moment in The Soup history so far was a clip that needed no help being hilarious. It was from a bizarre reality show (another strange element of The Soup is constantly asking yourself “Is that really a show? When is that on?”) called The Great American Road Trip. One particular family on the show, the DiSalvatore family, had been featured in previous clips arguing and being silly. In this clip, the family was preparing to embark on another challenge, and Daddy DiSalvatore beckoned everyone to put their hands together in a circle. Then he said, “Okay, DiSalvatore on three. DiSalvatore!”, threw his hand up, and walked away. His wife screeched, “What happened to ‘on three’?!”
Oh my gosh. I’m laughing now just thinking about it. I’m sorry but I couldn’t find a clip! Maybe you had to be there…
